The Big Apple
I am back in Houston now but I couldn't leave NY state without spending at least one day in the City. We dropped off our rental cars at JFK and then took the Long Island Railroad to Penn Station and then took the red line subway up to Times Square. Which I would recommend because it is the cheapest route by far but if you have a lot of luggage it and I mean more than one big suitcase, it gets pretty tricky. Tyler picked a Best Western right off Times Square, which ended up being a perfect location. Too bad the hotel prices in NYC are outrageous! Anyways, we started off the tour pretty quick and just walked randomly around the city with no certain schedule in no certain direction. I vaguely remembered where everything was from my last visit a year ago so I was the semi tour guide for my Canadian friends. We walked over to Rockefeller center and then towards the Ed Sullivan theatre where the Letterman Show is.
Then we headed towards Central Park which was absolutely amazing due to the great weather. There were thousands of people out there enjoying the nice day. One of my goals in life is to wake up one morning and go running in the Park, its still on the checklist though.
We stopped off and watched some sweet street dancers perform. I liked them so I threw a dollar in the bag.
Then we met up with one of my friends from Oregon. It just so happened Sarah was in the city with her family the same day I was. What's the chances of that!? We met up with her and walked over to Grand Central Station and then back over to Times Square to eat dinner with her family at ESPNzone. From there we split ways from the Fam who was headed back to West Point and we headed south towards Ground Zero. It's such a eerie feeling to be standing there at ground zero and trying to picture the massive size of the twin towers and trying to comprehend what happened. I never actually got to see the twin towers when they towered over the city so I think that makes it even harder to comprehend. From ground zero we headed to Battery Park to try and catch a good view of the Mrs. Liberty before the sun went down. A not so friendly skateboarder called us "Stupid Crackers" because we got in his way. I think its good to get called something like that, its adds to the whole NYC experience. Anyways, we worked our way over to Wall Street which at least to me was not that impressive. After $$$ Avenue the pilots decided it was time they head back to Long Island and Tyler and I headed for Greenwich Village. We went into a few pubs on Bleeker St. and then headed back to Times Square. We decided to get a taxi back just because we hadn't been in a Taxi yet. It was Sunday night so not many things were going on. All and all it was a great trip to NYC, I think I couldn't of stayed one more day, but man is it expensive! I still think it would be cool to live and work in NYC for 6 months to a year.
